| 8 dormancy
A very high
yielding, high quality, non dormant variety with resistance to
Spotted Alfalfa Aphid, Fusarium Wilt, Pea Aphid, Blue Alfalfa Aphid,
Root Knot Nematode and Phytophthora Root Rot.
Growth is erect,
recovers rapidly after cutting, and is adapted to areas of
California where fall forage is desired and varieties of dormancy
ratings 7, 8 and 9 are grown. This is an excellent dairy hay.
SW 8718 has
performed very well in University of California yield trials at the
Parlier-Kearney Agriculture Center, where it ranked first in
yields in a trial of 45 non-dormant varieties. At the end of three
years, SW 8718 had excellent stand persistence at Davis, Parlier and
Holtville trials.
SW 8718 was
developed in the Central and Southern San Joaquin Valley of
California, from Bakersfield to Merced. Plant selections were made
in field nurseries near Mendota, California.
