9 dormancy alfalfa variety | Non-dormant | High Yield | Salt tolerant | Alfalfa variety

Our plant-breeding efforts have been directed at creating salt-tolerant seed varieties capable of surviving very high salinity, while at the same time producing very high yields.

SW 9720

A high yielding, very non-dormant variety with salt tolerance.

Growth is erect with rapid recovery after cutting. SW 9720 is adapted to salty soils and to better soils, both in warm and hot temperature areas, from Yolo County, California to the Mexican border and south of there. Yields have been excellent in Davis, CA, Imperial County, CA and Maricopa County, AZ.

For hay production, SW 9720 is adapted to areas of California and Arizona where non-dormant varieties are recommended. SW 9720 was the highest yielding variety in the non-dormant forage trial of 48 entries at University of California, Davis. It is also doing very well in the Imperial Valley of California and at the University of Arizona Field Station of Maricopa, Arizona.

SW 9720 was developed on salty soils near Mendota, California and in salt selection forage trials in Tucson, Arizona. SW 9720 was synthesized from 90 plants and is a California Certified Variety.

SW 9628

A very high yielding non-dormant variety of alfalfa with resistance to Fusarium Wilt, Phytophthora Root Rot, Spotted Alfalfa Aphid, Pea Aphid, Blue Alfalfa Aphid and Root Knot Nematode.

Adaptation

SW 9628 alfalfa is a very non-dormant variety, with a dormancy rating of 9. Growth is erect with rapid recovery after cutting. It is adapted to areas of warm and very hot temperatures from the Central San Joaquin Valley to the lower desert areas of California and Arizona.

Disease, Insect and Nematode Resistance

SW 9628 is resistant to Root Knot Nematode and Spotted Alfalfa Aphid, resistant to Fusarium Wilt, Phytophthora Root rot, Pea Aphid and Blue Aphid. It also has low resistance to Bacterial Wilt and Anthracnose.

Uses

For hay production, SW 9628 is adapted to areas of California and Arizona where non-dormant varieties are recommended. SW 9628 was the Highest Yielding variety in the 3-year forage trial of 51 entries at the University of California Kearney Research Center, Parlier, California. It yields very well in the University of Arizona trials at Maricopa also.

Development

SW 9628 was developed in the Parker Valley, Arizona and in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California. Breeder’s seed was produced on very salty soil in the Mendota, California area. SW 9628 was synthesized from 135 plants and is a California Certified Variety.

SW 9500

Adapted to areas of California and Arizona where Fall forage is desired and varieties of dormancy 9 are grown. The average hay yields of SW 9500 in 8 location test years in California is 108.1% of CUF 101 yields in dry, hot climate areas.

SW 9400

Adapted to areas of California where Fall forage is desired and varieties of dormancy ratings 8 and 9 are grown. The average yields of SW 9400 in 9 location test years in California is 103.4% of CUF 101 yields. Stand persistence in these tests has been excellent for 4 years of intensive harvests.

SW 9400 has moderate resistance to Verticillium Wilt.

SW 9301

Adapted to areas of California where fall forage is desired and varieties of dormancy ratings 8 and 9 are grown. This variety has produced very well in California, Arizona, Argentina, Mexico and Saudi Arabia. The average hay yields of SW 9301 in 15 location test years in California is 112.8% of CUF 101 yields, and in 6 location test years in Mexico SW 9301 produced 105.3% of CUF 101yields.

SW 9301 will produce in salty soils under irrigation.
