8 dormancy alfalfa variety | Non-dormant | High Yield | Salt tolerant | Alfalfa variety

Our plant-breeding efforts have been directed at creating salt-tolerant seed varieties capable of surviving very high salinity, while at the same time producing very high yields.

SW 8718

A very high yielding, high quality, non dormant variety with resistance to Spotted Alfalfa Aphid, Fusarium Wilt, Pea Aphid, Blue Alfalfa Aphid, Root Knot Nematode and Phytophthora Root Rot.

Growth is erect, recovers rapidly after cutting, and is adapted to areas of California where fall forage is desired and varieties of dormancy ratings 7, 8 and 9 are grown. This is an excellent dairy hay.

SW 8718 has performed very well in University of California yield trials at the Parlier-Kearney Agriculture Center, where it ranked first in yields in a trial of 45 non-dormant varieties. At the end of three years, SW 8718 had excellent stand persistence at Davis, Parlier and Holtville trials.

SW 8718 was developed in the Central and Southern San Joaquin Valley of California, from Bakersfield to Merced. Plant selections were made in field nurseries near Mendota, California.

SW 8421S

SW 8421S produces high forage yields with or without high salt conditions. Using irrigation water with an Electrical Conductivity rating of 15 (very salty water), SW 8421S out-produced both the standard salinity check entry (AZ-90NDC-ST) and Salado by 39% and 32% respectively in University of Arizona salinity trials at Tucson.

Adaptation and Yields

SW 8421S is a non-dormant variety, with a fall dormancy rating of 8. Growth is erect with rapid recovery after cutting. It is adapted to areas of warm and hot temperatures from the central Sacramento valley to the low desert areas and coastal growing areas of California. SW 8421S has produced 15% more hay than Cuf 101 in the University of California trials in Fresno County, California and 14% more than Cuf 101 in Tucson, Arizona.

Resistance to Pests and Stand Resistance

This variety is highly resistant to Bacterial Wilt, Fusarium Wilt and to Spotted Alfalfa Aphid; resistant to Phytophthora Root Rot, Pea Aphid, Blue Alfalfa Aphid and to Southern Root Knot Nematode. Stand persistence in a three year trial at Tucson, Arizona was 96% at the end of three years, compared to Cuf 101 variety, which had a 61% survival of plants at that time.

Flexible

SW 8421S gives growers an 8 dormancy choice in both salty soils and good soils in temperatures typical of Central and Southern California alfalfa hay producing areas.

SW 8210

Adapted to areas of California, Arizona and Nevada where Fall forage is desired and varieties with Fall dormancy ratings 7 and 8 are grown. The average hay yields of SW 8210 in 16 location test years in California is 109.8% of CUF 101 yields; in 8 location test years in Argentina, SW 8210 produced 104% of CUF 101 yields.

See characteristics charts for insect, disease and nematode resistance information.

SW 8200

Adapted to areas of California and Argentina where Fall forage is desired and varieties of dormancy ratings 7, 8 and 9 are grown. The average hay yields of SW 8200 in 8 location test years in California is 110.3% of CUF 101 yields.

SW 8112

Adapted to areas of California and Argentina where Fall forage is desired and varieties of dormancy ratings 7, 8 and 9 are grown. The average hay yields of SW 8112 in 8 location test years in California is 109.9% of CUF 101 yields, and in 8 location test years in Argentina SW 8112 produced 105.1% of CUF 101 yields.
