Our plant-breeding efforts have been directed at creating salt-tolerant seed varieties capable of surviving very high salinity, while at the same time producing very high yields.
A semi-dormant variety of alfalfa with VERY HIGH QUALITY FORAGE and resistance to Root Knot Nematode, Fusarium Wilt, Spotted Alfalfa Aphid, Blue Alfalfa Aphid, Phytophthora Root Rot and Pea Aphid.
Adaptation and Appearance
SW 6403 alfalfa is a semi-dormant variety with dormancy rating of 6.5. Growth is erect, with medium fine stems, large leaves and dark green forage. SW 6403 is adapted to the Sacramento Valley and Northern and Central San Joaquin Valley of California. This is a VERY HIGH QUALITY hay producer.
Disease, insect and nematode resistance
SW 6403 is highly resistant to Blue Aphid and Fusarium Wilt. It is resistant to Spotted Alfalfa Aphid and Root Knot Nematode, and moderately resistant to Phytophthora Root Rot, Anthracnose and Pea Aphid.
Uses and Production
For hay production, this variety is adapted to areas suited to dormancy 6 or 7 alfalfas. SW 6403 has produced 11% more yield than CUF 101 in 3 years of University of California yield trials at UC Davis. This variety produces DAIRY QUALITY hay.
Development
SW 6403 was developed in the Imperial Valley and San Joaquin Valley of California, Final plant selections were made and breeder's seed produced near Mendota, California. SW 6403 was
synthesized from 84 plants and is a California Certified Variety.
A high yielding moderately dormant variety of alfalfa with Resistance to Bacterial Wilt, Fusarium Wilt, Anthracnose, Phytophthora Root Rot, Spotted Alfalfa Aphid, Pea Aphid and Southern Root knot Nematode, SW 6330 is also moderately resistant to Blue Alfalfa Aphid and Stem Nematode.
Adaptation and Appearance
SW 6330 is a high yielding variety, with a fall dormancy rating of 6. After four harvest years at the New Mexico Agricultural Science Center, Clovis New Mexico this variety was rated 100% for stand persistence in a clay soil. SW 6330 is adapted to the Southwest and Great Plains regions of the United States. The mid summer and fall growth is erect, recovers rapidly after cutting and produces well in climate areas suited to a dormancy of 6 rating.
Production
SW 6330 topped the three year yield trial conducted by the University of New Mexico at its Artesia field station. It also did very well at Clovis, New Mexico and at Davis, California in University yield trials.
Flexible
This variety gives California, Arizona and New Mexico hay growers and dairyman a good yielding variety with the feeding quality of a moderately dormant alfalfa. Its stand persistence is excellent.
